Trump, TikTok, and the Black Expat Escape: Why More Are Choosing México

Introduction: A Political Storm is Brewing—Where Will You Be?

If you’ve been on TikTok lately, you’ve probably seen the clips—Trump saying he’ll be a dictator on day one, plans for mass deportations, talks of using military force in U.S. cities, and even questioning birthright citizenship for children born to immigrants in America. People are shook, and rightfully so. For Black Americans, this ain’t just politics—it’s about survival.

Meanwhile, something else is happening on social media. More Black folks are talking about leaving the U.S.—for real this time. No more just dreaming about it. TikToks about moving abroad, finding peace, and building a new life in México are gaining traction, and the receipts are stacking up.

The question is: Are you watching from the sidelines, or are you making a plan?

The U.S. is Showing Its True Colors—Again

Trump’s policies aren’t just empty threats. We’ve seen this movie before. The BBC recently broke down what a second Trump presidency could look like, and let’s be honest—it’s looking grim. Here’s what’s at stake, specifically for us:

Mass Deportations & ICE Raids – Trump wants the biggest deportation operation in U.S. history. That means families ripped apart, more police power, and increased racial profiling. If you think this doesn’t affect Black folks, ask any Afro-Caribbean or African immigrant. Do you know someone who’s been impacted by ICE?

The Return of “Law & Order” Crackdowns – He’s talking about sending federal troops into American cities to handle “crime.” We know how that goes—Black neighborhoods getting overpoliced while white militias roam free. Didn’t we just go through this during BLM?

A Rise in White Nationalism – Trump’s rhetoric is gasoline on the fire for racist groups. We saw it in 2016, and we saw it again on January 6th. What happens if these folks feel even more emboldened? Are you prepared for what comes next?

Attack on Birthright Citizenship – Trump wants to challenge the 14th Amendment, which gives automatic citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil. If he succeeds, who’s next? Could Black Americans—who were never meant to be citizens in the first place—become second-class again?

This ain’t fear-mongering. This is history repeating itself. And at what point do we say: Enough?

The U.S. is Losing the People’s Confidence

It’s not just Trump. 2024 has been a wild ride already, and we’re only getting started. Let’s look at just a few things that have shaken people’s trust in the U.S. this year:

The economy is unstable. Inflation is sky-high, rent is unlivable, and people are struggling to make ends meet.

Gun violence is out of control. Mass shootings are a daily thing. Daily.

Racial tensions are boiling over. From book bans targeting Black history to politicians openly supporting white nationalist ideals, the writing is on the wall.

Politicians are playing games with people’s lives. Congress can barely function, and lawmakers are making moves that hurt working-class and Black communities the most.

ICE raids are back in full force. If you live in places like Atlanta, you already know the drill. I lived in Norcross, Georgia, where Buford Highway used to be a safe haven for Hispanic immigrants—until ICE started rounding folks up and deporting them in mass sweeps. And guess what? These policies are about to ramp up again.

At this point, you gotta ask yourself: Is the American Dream even real anymore?

Mérida, México: A Real Alternative

If the U.S. is falling apart, where do we go? For an increasing number of Black Americans, the answer is México—especially Mérida. And it’s not just because it’s cheaper. It’s because people are finding peace, safety, and a community that supports them.

We’ve covered this before in Uniting for Freedom: How Black Communities in Mérida, México are Thriving and Breaking Free: Why Black Americans Are Moving to Mérida, México for a Better Life. But let’s talk about what’s making more people pack up and leave right now.

1. Safety from Racial Violence

In México, you’re not walking around feeling like a target.

You don’t have to deal with “random” police stops that could turn deadly.

The energy is different. Black expats talk about feeling relief just by being here.

2. Cost of Living = Financial Freedom

The economy in the U.S. is choking Black wealth. In Mérida, a middle-class lifestyle is affordable.

Rent is a fraction of what it costs in places like Atlanta, NYC, or Houston.

Healthcare? No need to go broke over a doctor’s visit.

3. The Black Expat Network is Growing

There’s an entire Black expat community here, and it’s growing every day.

You’re not alone—there are people who’ve been where you are and are ready to help.

It’s not just about escaping the U.S. It’s about thriving somewhere new.

Have you considered moving abroad? If not, what’s holding you back?

China, Rednote, and The Great Awakening

Something interesting is happening: Americans are waking up.

China is having direct conversations with Black Americans. They’re calling out U.S. hypocrisy on race and politics—and people are paying attention.

Rednote, the leaked internal reports about U.S. censorship, is exposing how media controls the narrative.

The world is watching the U.S. crumble. The question is: Are you watching, too?

Final Thoughts: What’s Your Next Move?

This isn’t about panic—it’s about preparation. No one is saying México is perfect, but what’s clear is that the U.S. is becoming more unlivable for Black folks by the day.

So, ask yourself:

What do you want your life to look like in 5 years?

How much more are you willing to tolerate before considering other options?

If not the U.S., then where?

The signs are all around us. Black folks are making moves—and maybe it’s time you do, too.
