Vinnie and Taylor weren't planning an exit when the layoffs came. Within a few months of each other, they both lost corporate jobs that had stopped wanting them there anyway. What followed wasn't a backup plan, it was liberation: a decision to stop treating survival in the United States as the only option and start building something different in Mérida, México.
One month in, they're still adjusting to the particulars. Police in Mérida often don't carry guns, and an interaction with one feels more like a conversation than a threat, a genuine wow moment compared to what they knew back home. Eggs run about sixty two cents. The streets are bumpy, and somebody has to explain the toilet paper rule to every new arrival eventually.
Their military background gave them a financial foundation most people relocating don't start with, and that security is part of why the move felt possible instead of reckless. But the thing they keep coming back to is time, actual time with their kids, after years of a work schedule that was taking it from all of them. As Vinnie puts it, time is the currency now, and eventually, he says, everyone who moves abroad learns that the hustle back home was selling something that never delivered.
Family members who haven't left the United States are afraid, mostly because of what they see in the news. Vinnie and Taylor get it. They just don't share it anymore.
If the safety you just heard about, or the money, or getting that time back with your own kids is the thing holding you where you are, Vinnie and Taylor already asked and answered the same questions. What's actually stopping you?
